Our Story

We're Not a Hotel.
That's the Point.

Six rooms, one family, and sixteen years of knowing that the small things matter more than people think.

How It Started
A House Above the Harbour

My parents bought this place in 2009 when Swanage was still the kind of town that locals kept secret. It was a tired guest house with four rooms, a broken boiler, and the most extraordinary view either of them had ever seen from a kitchen window.

They spent a year doing it properly — not cheaply, properly. New plumbing, handmade furniture, beds from a maker in Shaftesbury. Six rooms instead of four, because the garden room was too good to waste.

I grew up here. Helped at breakfast from about age nine. Took over the keys in 2019. The boiler's still the same one, but everything else has been touched at least twice.

The People
Who You'll Actually Meet
Emma Thornton
Owner & Host

Grew up here, left for a few years, came back because nothing else made sense. Responsible for breakfast, the garden, and knowing which table in the Bay Restaurant is the best one.

Dan Thornton
Chef & Co-owner

Worked in kitchens in London for nine years before deciding that Dorset bacon was worth coming home for. Responsible for breakfast, the sourdough, and making it look effortless.

Ruth Carver
Housekeeping & Guest Services

Has worked here since 2014 and knows where everything is. If you need a restaurant recommendation, a taxi, or a very specific type of pillow, she's the one to ask.

What We Believe In
The Things We Don't Compromise On
01

Breakfast is Sacred

Local eggs, Dorset bacon, bread Dan baked at 6am. Not a buffet. Not a hot lamp. A proper breakfast cooked to order, every morning, no rush.

02

Quality Over Quantity

Six rooms is the right number. Small enough to actually know who's staying and why they're here. We're not trying to fill 40 rooms every night.

03

Honest Local Knowledge

We'll tell you the best walk, the best pub, and the beach that isn't on any map. And we'll also tell you which tourist trap to avoid, even if it's nearby.

04

No Nasty Surprises

What you see on the website is what you get. No resort fees. No auto-gratuity. No checkout at 9am sharp. We'll tell you if anything's different.

Come and See for Yourself

We're easy to get to, hard to leave, and we'll have the kettle on.
